Jesus encountered a woman at a well and made a big claim: “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.” The woman thought he was talking about literal water: “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t …have to keep coming here to draw water.” Then Jesus said something very mysterious: to receive the water of life, he said, “go, call your husband and come back.” He was talking about the Holy Marriage Blessing—the fount of eternal life. Jesus knew her sin, but was ready to forgive and bless.
